The Red Shoes (1948) is a masterpiece of musical comedy and romantic drama, directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, starring Moira Shearer as the ballerina Vicky Page. The story follows Vicky, a talented young dancer, who joins the prestigious troupe of the tyrannical Boris Lermontov. Under his guidance, she becomes the star of the ballet "The Red Shoes", composed by Julian Craster. But Lermontov demands total devotion to art, refusing to allow any place for love. When Vicky falls in love with Julian, she finds herself torn between her passion for dance and the call of her heart.
The dilemma reaches its climax when Lermontov offers her the lead role in a major premiere, while Julian wants her to leave the stage to live with him. Unable to choose, Vicky succumbs to the pressure: as she is about to go on stage, she seems possessed by the red shoes and flees the theater to throw herself in front of a train, in a moving scene that echoes Andersen's fairy tale. In his arms, dying, Julian removes her shoes at her request. Lermontov then announces to the audience that Vicky will never dance again, but that the performance will take place in her honor, the role being danced by a simple beam of light.
